Frequently Asked Questions

Does this plugin change how shortcodes work?

No. You can continue to use your shortcodes exactly as you have been. The only difference will be that you can use your shortcodes in the additional contexts that you enable in the plugin’s settings.

Does this plugin include a shortcode builder?

No. The plugin is designed to enable shortcodes in additional contexts; it is not a builder.

Where all can I use shortcodes with this plugin?

You can continue to use shortcodes in your posts and pages, just like always – and you can enable shortcodes for use in your post excerpts, category and tag descriptions, HTML and text widgets, and even your comments section.

Can I disable shortcodes everywhere with this plugin?

Yes! While the plugin is called "Shortcodes Everywhere" it could just as easily have been called "Shortcodes Nowhere". It’s completely your decision; the plugin assumes nothing.

What happens if I uninstall the plugin?

The developer might be a little sad, but, that’s about it. Your shortcodes will just go back to their previous behavior of only running in posts, pages, and the text widget – just like it was before you installed the plugin.

Can I use any shortcode in any context?

For the most part, yes, however, there may be some limitations. For example, some shortcodes are designed to work "in the loop" only – those shortcodes wouldn’t work in, say, a widget or comment context.

I disabled shortcodes for posts and my layout broke! What the deuce?

If you are using a page builder that uses shortcodes to construct the layout of a post, you will need to leave shortcodes enabled for that context. Disabling shortcodes for any context will strip them from the given context.

I see a few raw shortcodes where they should be disabled – is something broken?

No. The plugin can only disable shortcodes that are currently registered in the system. So, if you installed a plugin that contained shortcodes, used those shortcodes on your site, and then later uninstalled that plugin without removing those shortcodes, the Shortcodes Everywhere plugin will have no way to know about them. In these cases, the shortcodes will be shown in plain text rather than stripped from the content, however, because the old plugin is no longer installed, they actually won’t run anyway.
